VXR Vectra: Performance | Interior | Exterior | Specifications

Few other mid-range five-seat hatchbacks or estates have such stunning performance credentials. Give free rein to that 280PS 2.8-litre V6 Turbo for the kind of incandescent performance that propels you from 0 to 60mph in just 6.1 seconds.

Engine & Power

  • 2.8-litre (2792cc) ECOTEC-V6 twin-scroll turbo with Variable Valve Timing
  • Max. power : 280PS (206kW) @ 5500rpm
  • Max. torque: 355Nm (262 ft. lb) @ 1800-4500rpm
  • Compression ratio: 9.5:1
  • Bore/stroke: 89.0 x 74.8mm

The Vectra's 2.8-litre turbocharged V6 engine uses steel cylinder liners cast into a solid aluminium engine block. The cylinder banks are 60 degrees apart, with 2 camshafts per bank and 4 valves per cylinder. The engine is a crossflow type, i.e. with intake ducts on one side of the combustion chambers and exhaust ducts on the other.

The 'twin scroll' turbocharger, relatively new for petrol engines, employs a turbine housing divided into two spirals, one fed from the front cylinder bank, the other from the rear. The compressor's standard design achieves better performance, lower fuel consumption and lower emissions.

Continuously variable cam phasing (CVCP) produces continual variation of the intake camshaft positions (phasing). The duration (number of degrees the valves are held open) remains constant. It is the position of the cam lobes i.e. the camshaft angles when the intake valves open and close, that are different. The electronic control unit's hydraulic valves achieve an optimal intake camshaft setting at any given operating point.

The turbocharger uses the energy of the exhaust pulses as a propelling force rather than the more or less constant flow of exhaust gases. This allows it to react more quickly. The lower average pressure of the exhaust gases also improves engine ventilation. There is little flow of exhaust gases from the exhaust manifold into the cylinder, resulting in efficient cleansing with low residual gas content.

The V6 produces a massive 280PS and 355Nm of torque, making the Vectra VXR the most powerful in its class.
